Mineral Monday - 03/28/2022

Here are three more minerals from my collection.

Labradorite is a relatively common mineral that may have twinning that causes iridescence of blues, greens, and yellows. In perfect specimens it can actually be of gem quality. This specimen is from Madagascar.

Petrified Wood gets its beautiful variety of colors from the different oxidation states of iron in the fossil wood. This is from the area around Holbrook, AZ

This combination of Smokey Quartz and Amazonite is one of the most sought-after combinations of minerals in the world of mineral collection. These come from the Pikes Peak area of Colorado.

A fun set indeed - is the Labradorite translucent or is this just front light on the specimen? Beautiful patterning in either case. I love the contrast between the Smokey Quartz and the Amazonite.

I didn't know you were into rocks and minerals! I always appreciate lessons in geology. The colors in these specimens are spectacular.
Thanks, Amy. I am a former Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences. In fact, my youthful love for rocks and minerals was the driving force to major in Geology in college.
