Minerals

As a professional geologist I have always absolutely loved minerals. There are so many wonderful colors and shapes. Here are some of my favorites from my collection.

Petrified wood with rare green color. I found this in Chinle Wash near Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

These are gorgeous, Doug! What's the scale on them? That petrified wood is really unusual.
Thank you, Monika. The petrified wood is the size of the palm of my hand, the garnet covered specimen is slightly smaller than the palm of my hand, and the wulfenite is the size of my thumb. Although I have never seen this color green in petrified wood, I have seen some with a more bluish-green tint.

I can see why these are favorites - I love the garnets and smokey quartz crystals contrasting with the K-feldspar.
Thanks for your kind comments, Alan. This is an unusual specimen, and I haven't seen any more of these on the market lately since the flourish of them from a specific mine several years ago.

Wow Doug! What super cool looking rocks! While I am horrible with names of rocks I have always enjoyed looking for rocks when I am out and picking up rocks that look pretty or different. So it’s really cool seeing these. My favorite would be #2 because it’s so different then anything I have ever seen. I probably have never seen the green coloring in petrified wood, I guess I never knew about it, but now I will keep my eye out for it.

This is a really interesting thread Doug, hopefully you keep it up on a weekly basis?

Thanks, Jim. I have plenty of mineral images so I could keep this going for a bit.
