Within 3 miles of the trailhead at Hanson's Mill is East Bellows Creek. Somehow, after hiking 26 miles in a day a week before, I thought it was probably 1-1 1/2 miles..... There was enough water in the creek to be my excuse to turn around, but not until after I spent a little time with Aconitum columbianum (not one of those names that just rolls off the tongue). Aconite species when ingested are highly toxic to humans, causing cardiac arrhythmias, gut problems and neuromuscular dysfunction leading to asphyxia (oxygen deprivation). In homeopathy, aconite (a nappelus) is used for acute cases of anxiety, fear of impending death, vertigo and being easily startled, among other things.

Interesting writeup on this plant. Good portrait too I might add.

I decided to read carefully since this is currently one of the species my wife has growing in our backyard.
