Moon Setting in Needles

Heading back from New Mexico a month or so ago, I began to visually track the moon and see where I could maybe capture it as it was setting. Looking at the time, I figured I could get it around the Needles area of California/Arizona. I have shot the cool mountains by the Colorado river there before and was looking for something a bit different.

So taking the 2nd exit before entering California, with my GPS app running, I started driving some back roads heading toward the Needle rocks. Often they were not visible, and I couldn't tell by the topo map exactly which road would take me close to where I wanted to go, or if any actually would get me there. I just kept driving by the seat of my pants and heading in a SW direction as much as possible. The road turned into a real 4X4 road, and started getting pretty narrow, but my jeep still fit between the walls without getting too scratched up. Taking it to where it dead ended, ended up getting me close to where I wanted, though I was not able to get all the way to the Colorado River I still ended up with some nice compositions.

It was about 105 degrees at that point, so I made sure to take extra water with me, even though sunset at this point was only about 30 mins away and I didn't figure on getting too far from my jeep. Anyway, so I was able to get a few shots like this before the moon disappeared behind clouds and I switched to shooting wider and getting the sunset with the really twisted rock formations.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

You are certainly serious about how far you will go to get your shot :)

I like it. You do have a serious dust bunny about half way up and 20% over from the left.

I like the elements in the image but the slope of the rocks with the dead vertical center moon and shrub makes for a kind of off balanced comp although the lit up clouds on the left side help lift it up.

Ugh.... I thought the dust bunnies were all in their cages eating carrots... I guess one got out.

Thanks for the thoughts on the composition. This is a slight crop from how it was shot, my goal was trying to get the moon big enough that it actually looked cool with some detail. Maybe I tried to hard. So maybe I can back up a bit and go back and look at the original shot.

Hi jim, I know what you mean about trying to find a spot using GPS and maps and seat of your pants. Sometimes it works and sometimes not.

This time did for sure, I like it.

I like it Jim. Nice soft colors and a good line of separation moving across the image.

My one improvement suggestion per post.

There appears to be some sensor dust spots in and near the clouds on the lower left quarter of the image. I'd clean those up.

Man, you really wanted to make an image that afternoon. Needles is pretty much a fly-by town for me, though I've 'camped' near an old abandon structure near the gas station on occasion. This last trip i made it to Ludlow and hid behind a shut down auto shop for the night @100 degrees.

Good that you took something home. Nice shot.
