This is from the end of April. I ran over to Black Canyon of the Gunnison for a quick trip. The moon was at 80%, so I should have known better as I usually never capture the Milky Way if its more then 25 or 30%, but sometimes you just have to get out and you have to take the hand you were dealt.
So while the moon was up, the Milky Way was extremely washed out. When the moon did set about 4am, then the ground was too dark... So for this image I took the best of both worlds. I used a frame where the moon was lighting up the canyon, and then used a layer mask to blend in the Milky Way from about 4am after the moon had set.
This was mainly a trip to test out a new lens for use in canyons with the Milky Way. My normal 14mm isn't wide enough so I was trying out a 12mm f2.8 lens from Samyang. It takes some careful composing, but it was nice to get that little bit extra in the canyon without cutting off too much of the Milky Way. The lens worked great, I will need to test it a time or two more to see how well I will like the look for timelapses.
