Very interesting Alan. Looks like desert varnish of a different color. That is, some white tinted water ran down the slope and left behind a coating. Those sedimentary layers in the sandstone are always interesting. I love red rock country.

Not quite - the vertical white bands are intrusive and predate whatever leached through the sandstone to create the tints. The white bands are harder than the sandstone so they erode more slowly than the sandstone. The color show in the sandstone is not just on the surface.

VoF is such a cool place. And while it's better known now, these little areas seem to still get overlooked.
