New Computer

I have almost finished building a new computer. So far it is up and working perfectly using SSDs but I still need to fit the old style rotating discs. Running Win 11 Intel 13600K CPU, Nvidia 3060 GPU, only 32GB of memory that can be updated if I need to. It seems quite quick although I haven't tried anything very complex yet. I ran the Puget photoshop benchmark which gave a score of 1396 which is about 40 to 50% faster than an Apple M1 Ultra. I did think of buying a fast Mac but the diy windows machine has many advantages including expandability and price. However it uses more electricity and is much larger but it sits under the desk and is invisible and it doesn't use enormous amounts of electricity. Ken

Congrats Ken! That's so awesome.

My only issue with your build is Windows 11. I hate Windows 11. Windows 10 is awesome, but Windows 11 they crippled half of the menu's. Not sure if you use File Explorer, but I do and they removed Rename, etc to under Other I think it is. So it's constantly double the clicks to do anything with your files and photos. My main computer is Windows 10, and I have to once a week turn down the upgrade offer to Windows 11.

I am guessing Microsoft thinks we are all dumb and has forgotten how we use our computers? They think all we do is play YouTube video's and games on them?

Jim I have already cane across the problem, not seeing Delete. Simple solution in tomshardware resorts full context menus.

I found a few weeks ago a solution, and it may be the same, its a program called "StartAllBack" and it brings back the full context menu's too.

I am glad I am not alone in being bothered by the shortchanged menu's in Windows 11.

I just click on the file, wait a second, then click on it again

Renaming isn't a real problem as you demonstrated, but it's one of the ones that Microsoft removed from the main menu panel. I have way too many years of doing things a certain way, and when things change, items are removed or placed behind more clicks of the mouse, it really bothers me.

Oliver, there are solutions finally that bring back the old full context menu's. "StartAllBack" is one I found, Ken mentioned a solution on Ken's Hardware, I am not sure if it's the same.

But it's sad that Microsoft couldn't just give us a simple toggle then between a simple menu and full context menu's. It's really sad to me.

You can also edit the registry, it takes 10seconds to fix it once for all:

1) typ RegEdit

2) go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID

3) right Click , select > New > Key, copy & paste this:

{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}

4) Right under the new Key you just created, right click again to select > New > Key,

copy & paste:

InprocServer32

5) this step is important:

Double-click the (Default) registry entry, press Enter without typing anything.

6) Restart the computer


You should see the Rename option.

Ah you just saved me getting the screen grabs and posting this. I dislike the modern trend of "I will just make this simple for you". Brought up on pre windows machines I still use keystrokes for many functions. Ken
