NGC 2070 Tarantula Nebula in Narrowband HSO

NGC 2070 or more commonly known as the Tarantula Nebula is a popular target in the southern hemisphere. This large emission nebula is an extremely luminous non-stellar object about 160,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud with an estimated diameter of 652 light-years. It is the most active region of star formation in the Local Group of galaxies. I've chosen the HSO base palette with the strongest 2 channels applied to Red and Blue.
89 x 300s HSO subs shot @-10C spread across 5 nights for a total integration time of about 7.5hrs

This is really sweet Carlos! No wonder it's a popular target. I can see where it would be called Tarantula, though I think other names would be possible too. I see a Terrier, a Lion, a couple of hearts too. :)

Haha so true Jim ! All in the eye of the beholder. There is so much to shoot in this area and its surrounds and the signal in all 3 narrow bands is strong.

Cheers

Sigh. It is always instant love when this amazing Southern Sky target gets posted. I have a trip to Australia getting planned for 2023, and I am hoping to somehow fashion a way to be able to image a little bit while down there, without having to bring a ton of complicated and heavy gear, just because of amazing objects like this.

This is a great image, tons of detail and complex colors, as well as a deep view fading away into darker dust on the edges - spellbinding! :)

Thanks Mike ! Appreciate your comments! Haha us SH'ers have our own share of gorgeous targets and this is definitely one of them, not too hard to shoot and process. But you NH'ers have your own share as well ! Wow, are you heading down this way in 2023? Awesome ! If you're planning a trip to Western Australia (we pride our dark skies here in the west) let me know as I have a friend who arranges trips up to a place called the Karajini National Park where the dark skies are out of this world !

Carlos,

Well that is good to know. WE are a bit conflicted on our itinerary, it is of course such a huge continent/country with just too many places to visit in any sort of a single trip. I expect we may not get to the western parts, although everything not decided quite yet. I am of course also very keen to do a bunch of scenic photography while there as well, so will have that gear with me. I expect then that perhaps my R5 will be pressed into service as an astro camera, but perhaps I can bring something else for astro, we will see. Will keep your offer of assistance from your friend in mind for sure though 👍
