On a mission.

The 3 photos below were taken the same day less than 10 minutes apart from the same location.
My plan was to get up early to get to a popular spot before other photographers showed up to take a picture of the owl just as the sun came up (best light) . There was only one spot to set up a tripod to get the best view of the owl so getting there early was critical. After setting up my tripod I noticed a person approaching and thought to myself, ha I beat them to "the spot". As it turn out it was just someone out for and early morning walk. He stopped to talk which turn out to be a blessing. I was so focused on the owl I would not have seen the Great Blue Heron sitting in the dead tree in front of the moon if not for him pointing it out. I grabbed my camera off the tripod (I didn't want to lose my claim to "the spot" for the owl pic) and got as close as I could and took a few shoots just before the GBH few to another dead tree this time in front of the rising sun. By this time several others photographers were approaching so I made it back to my tripod and took the picture of the Horn Owl and baby. I relinquished the spot and headed back to my car. It was not till I viewed the pictures on my computer did I realize what I would have missed if not for that other person getting me to look around a little. Having a plan is great, but take the time to consider other options when shooting was the lesson I learned.

Very nice set here, the second is my favorite of the set. Is that owl nesting in a palm tree?

Very cool set of images. I have no interest in proclaiming one of them to be a favorite - I would be delighted to have shot any of them.

Hey Robert, the backstory was awesome! And that is really cool what you came away with!

Hey RC. Great story and lesson to us all - to be aware always of what is around! The Heron/moon shot is a great happenstance which you were able to grab and I also like the owl pic that you planned.
