Petrified Forest NP

Here are some from one of my visits to the Petrified Forest. The place is so cool, with so many interesting petrified rocks, but finding compelling compositions can be harder then one might first think. I was doing some work providing geology photos for text books, so I visited a lot of the National Parks and Monuments with that in mind. It was a fun project until the stock photo market really took off and the book publishers chose to just buy photos for pennies, even if the quality wasn't as good.

Petrified trees are an amazing phenomenon. These almost look like they were cut with a saw before becoming petrified. Nice work here.

My recollections of that place aren't the freshest but you have reenforced my thinking that good comps would be hard to come by. That first shot works and I like #3 as well.

Second what Alan said. I have a hard time finding good compositions. It is a fascinating place to visit.

The first one works well.

My wife and I fell in love with the smaller cousin of this park, Petrified Forest State Park, in the Escalante region of UT. We went there for the good campground (with showers), but really enjoyed the short hike (with very few people) that takes you past fantastic logs like the ones you show here. I'm looking forward to revisiting with my new macro lens. When we eventually make it to AZ we plan on hitting the NP also, so thanks for the psych - I'll take the difficulty in finding good shots as a fun challenge.

Thanks Ben! Yeah, they way they are in pieces like they have been sawn into pieces always amazes me.

I don't think I have been to the state park, I will have to remember to go by there sometime.

I believe that this is one of the most difficult places to take great landscape images. Some are out there but you really have to look. Focusing in on the intimate details can be much more rewarding as you did in your second thread. Maybe you should make this your Friday focus just to see what is out there.

I enjoyed my drive through the park back in Dec, albeit with not the best light, and not enough time to really explore. Will have to make a return trip!
