Photomicrograph of Biotite Schist

This is a photomicrograph of a thin section of biotite schist magnified ten times. I put the thin section on the stage under the 10x objective and then put a tube that I can attach the camera to into the body tube where the eyepiece goes and focus it. Photomicrographs of this type open a whole new world of viewing the minerals that comprise rocks.

Another great image Douglas. I used to do photomicrography for my work. In that case we were looking for contaminates of switch surfaces. This was before digital so we attached a film camera as you described.

So will all rocks of a any given type all look the same when magnified like this?

Each rock will look different depending on the minerals present, Jim. and each mineral looks different from all of the others. I'll do another thread with a bunch of different rocks to demonstrate what I am talking about.

These are cool. They are so random. I guess that's why we're nature photographers - even rocks are fascinating. ;-)
