Saint-Malo Rooftops

Hey everyone! I wanted to share this photo from 2019 I recently reprocessed. For Mother's Day I thought I would get a jigsaw puzzle for my mom made with one of my photos. She's been on a puzzle kick lately. I've always had this photo in the back of my mind because it's so interesting to look at all these rooftops and windows. I took this from a castle window in Saint-Malo, the fortress city in Brittany.

So the first version is the way I would normally crop it, and #2 is the puzzle version which includes the tops of the dormers along the bottom and removes some sky at the top (who wants to do a ton of boring sky in their jigsaw puzzles?). I enjoyed getting to study the myriad details in this photo. It reminded me what a different kind of job building renovation must be in historic European cities vs. US cities - no angle looks straight! C&C welcome.

I can see where this would make a hard puzzle :)

DIY projects on historical structures like these requires someone with experience in all of the old techniques that were in use over the past couple hundred years. Its kind of fun picking out all of the non parallel walls and rooflines in this scene - a veritable riot of mismatches.

I love Jigsaw puzzles! And this one looks like lots of fun! How many pieces was it?

Love the image!

I agree, the first is a better photo, the second a better puzzle.
Great gift idea Amy, I’m sure she will thrilled. (Nice image by the way).
Neat pair and the puzzle will keep someone busy for a while.

Thanks everyone!

It's rewarding to come up with a good gift idea. You're right Alan, this makes for a pretty challenging puzzle but my parents are no novices, and once my dad gets involved (and there's a good chance he will once he sees the picture) it will get finished in a matter of hours. So to answer Jim's question, I was originally thinking 1000 pieces since that's typically been a favorite size in our family but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't take it up a notch and go for the next size up.

I'll look forward to doing it too after they're done with it :)
