Salvage Saturday

I was bored to tears wandering around Kodachrome Basin in Utah one year on a bright sunny day wishing there was a worthwhile composition somewhere and resorted to looking for small scenes near the trails. I came across some deadwood that had very interesting shapes and textures but struggled to find a good angle to get the most out of the scene and ultimately grabbed some captures that I never spent much time trying to process. I decided to give it another go and went for B&W to give me more room to play.

I like the wavy lines in this, Alan. Nice job. Why were you bored to tears?

This one is from Anza Borrego Desert State Park at sunrise during a super bloom. I took this image because I was impressed with the variety of plants in such a small area of desert landscape. It was very dark in the foreground because of the bright sunrise. I played with it in Photoshop and Lightroom to make it acceptable.

Kodachrome Basin is an interesting place to visit from a geological perspective but on a cloudless sunny day was almost devoid of interesting compositions and had a lot of harsh light. Small scenes worked but wider scenes just weren't working for me that day.

I see what you mean. During my visit, it was completely overcast, a layer of featureless gray clouds. It made for similar bland compositions. But the geology there is indeed fascinating.

I have been thinking of going for the Tulip festival in Skagit Valley but due to the cold weather, its a bit late this year. This is from the archives from 2009 and one of the images I never processed. I tried a shallow DoF and still not sure if I like it enough.

That’s the nature of salvaged images they were not quite good enough the first go around. I like your colors here
