Skyline Overlook Milky Way

This is from last Thursday at the Skyline Overlook. Thanks to Ben for helping me to get there with directions good enough that I could find my way on a moonless night along a dim trail and still find it. :)

This is a 4 shot blended pano due to it being a moonless night. The ground layer was shot at 10 mins at ISO 800 and is 2 horizontal shots and the sky is 25 secs at ISO 3200 again 2 horizontal shots to complete the pano.

Skyline Overlook is a great location, and I will definitely be back.

Jim, this is great, you have just the right amount of foreground light and the milky way is super.

I saved it and brought it up in Photoshop to edit and noticed the profile is U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 and in CMYK. That could explain why it looked wrong on my phone and in my browser. Looked much better in Photoshop.

Here is just a convert into SRGB

I do think the sky could use a little more contrast, so I used levels to bring down the white point and bring up the midpoint. I used a mask to apply the full affect to the sky and only 50% to the ground.

Thanks Kyle, appreciate your thoughts on the look! I am editing on my laptop which I had updated to Photoshop CC but since I use my desktop at home, I must of missed a couple of configuration changes like the Profile. Thanks so much for catching it before I edit too many more photos here on the road.

Nice job, Jim (& Kyle). All that blending is a long ways from your usual 1-shot wonders.

Nice job, Jim-- all that blending is a long ways from your usual 1-shot wonders. Sometimes it's really worth it & this is one time. I like Kyle's edits, though.

Wow - Kyle's edits put this one over the top. The color space mismatch was a huge step up from the muddy tones in the foreground.

Great job on the edit Kyle! I thought about commenting about that, but didn't have a fix, so just enjoyed the composition.

Truly a tremendous result - and I personally like Kyle's updates very much. Just a super result in every way - wonderful depth and detail in the sky (you can even see the green 'airglow' on the far horizon) and just the right amount of detail on the ground to keep it looking realistic.

I didnt get the "airplane window view" look either, thank God we have Kyle, cause i though Jim got bitten by some "artistic" bug in the "nature"...

Beautiful work Jim.
