Snowy sunrise

Yesterday morning, I hiked up a nearby mountain to the summit. WInter storm Izzy made quite an impression with snow, sleet, freezing rain, and more snow (our road is still impassable!). There were high winds, it was about 2 degrees with the windchill, and there was about a foot of snow on the ground. The trail, which is normally moderate, had rhododendrons that were so laden with ice that I had to crawl under them about 5 or 6 different times. As a result, I could not reach my favorite sunrise spot in time, but had to settle for my second favorite spot. Was really pooped after I got home but very glad I went! Here are a couple of images I liked. Both are single exposures with no filters. Clouds were moving really fast so I stopped down to F16 and forgot about focus stacking. These are on tripod with Fuji GFX 100S and GF 23/4. Comments and criticisms welcome, as always.

Wow Stephen! Great job getting out and up and hiking out in those conditions. Both of these have such really nice light and color. I don't think I can choose a favorite between these 2.

Goodonya getting out in those conditions. You must have gotten cold fingers taking these. Wonderful light and clouds, the backlit icy branches in the second really catch my eye.

Stephen, the first one is stunning, love the golden hue on the snow.

I really like "The Heat Company" as they have tight fitting gloves that I can use for my camera (and phone as they have a patch on the index finger for screens) and the gloves (they call them liners) fit inside mittens. The mittens open up both for the fingers and thumb if you want to keep the mittens on while using the camera. Both the mittens and liners have places to put chemical hand warmers if it is really cold. I used the mittens until I got warm from hiking and then just used gloves when shooting. When I was in Iceland in February, I sometimes used chemical hand warmers (and foot warmers). "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!" I also have become a devotee of "Buff" wool neck gaiters. I was well dressed for the weather with lots of layers, two pairs of wool socks, hat, etc. I was never cold!

Fantastic colors and atmospherics. The conditions look pretty bad to be out even trying but your description of your solution for your fingers takes a bit of the edge off of the cold. Not going to choose a favorite - both are great.

Beautiful light -- the kind you only get in really cold temperatures. Thanks for venturing out & pushing on to that vantage point!
