Stellar' Jay

I had never even heard of a Steller's Jay until I saw one about a mile from my house last year. Since then, this bird has hidden from me for an entire year. He would just do a quick fly buy and then disappear. Well today I had to take my son to the dentist and there have been a lot of turkey's out lately, so I rarely leave without taking the camera. As I was just about to pull out of the neighborhood, he flew right past me and landed in a tree about 30 yards away. FINALLY!!! I just think these are some of the best looking birds around. CC is always welcomed.

Very cool. I like the view of the face here - the Stellar's Jay in your area is a bit different from the ones I see in the Pacific NW with the white stripes going up the forehead from the beak and the white eyebrows. You got some good light for your capture.

The Stellar's Jay in the NW have a pure black head and the top of the wings near the shoulders have a darker blue hue. Big Birds and they aren't exactly quiet.

That's interesting. I live about a mile from the trees in eastern CO and they sure tend to stay over there. So I don't hear them. The Magpies nesting about 200 yards from my house are a different matter. Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it.

Nice shot. Like Alan I live in the NW and ours have pure black heads. I don't care for the buggers because of their loud squak, they can also munch down a whole block of suet in a couple days if I hang it where they can access it, so I have to put it under our deck which makes it hard for them to access, leaving something for the chickadees.
