Sunset at Foster Falls

This is from Sunday night. I usually get down below and shoot the falls (close to 70' high) but today, I decided to shoot at the overlook. I was hopeful that the light would be nice at dusk. The clouds in the sky had me hopeful and I knew the colors would be coming out nicely in the trees. I shoot this overlook often in winter with the leaves are gone, in B&W when there is significant drama in the sky making for a stark, moody scene. Today, I wanted something different and believe I got what I came out for.

As I side note, for some interesting back story, the cliff to the left is over 100' from the base of the falls and it is nothing but rocks on that side. Well, it was a rainy afternoon and I was up on the edge trying to get "that shot." Well, I turned around to leave and my feet slipped right out from under me on the slick sandstone and I went sliding off the edge. Luckily I landed flat on my chest and my rear foot caught the little tree overhanging the edge as I started to slide towards the sheer drop off. This kept me from going over. My wife was not pleased with my antics to say the least but I just shrugged and played it off. I really however was in a precarious and dangerous position, very nearly falling to my demise.

Oh my - that sounds truly scary. This shot is excellent (I think it is my favorite of the 2 recent sets you have posted) but obviously not worth risking life and limb for.

But I know how it goes. I was at the Grand Canyon a few years ago, and was set up ona very large outcrop, that had a very small little 'crack' to step over. Not too worrisome, or so I thought. After setting up the tripod and shooting for a while it was time to back off, and in my excitement of shooting, combined with that small amount of disorientation caused by moving quickly after standing still for a long time I almost miss-stepped right into the crack. With my hands full of gear I likely would have broken an ankjle, and it I had rolled the wrong way, then could have gone off the side. It was one of those experiences that you don't think about to hard in the moment, but then feel more and more scared about after the fact.

Anyway, very glad you are OK, and you certainly did come away with a very nice capture!

Hey Jon, I am glad that tree caught you! Even being careful sometimes things happen. I am glad it all turned out well.

This is a really cool shot. Love the clouds, cool shapes in them along with that color. And of course the fall color is great.

I have been more conscious of late of my surroundings. I had a worse scare about 2 years ago that really put things in perspective. And thank you

Thank you. As I mentioned to Ben above, there was one situation which was much worse and after the fact, was scared due to the remoteness.
