The Anti Sunset

An Anti-Crepuscular Ray sunset that is. :)

I didn't have much in the way of clouds for sunset but I had something that can be just as cool with the Anti-Crepuscular Rays and the Crepuscular Rays. This is out at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. I place that I have been wanting to visit for years and now that I have been there once, I can't wait to get back there again.

I think this is my favorite Bonneville Image, this one is a wall hanger. Next time you are there, give me a few days notice and I will join you.

Very interesting light - I didn't know there was a term for this until looking it up just now. You are making me rethink my notions of the Salt Flats as an interesting place to shoot. I have driven through that area on the freeway dozens of times and always thought of it as a wasteland.

Thanks so much Ben! I don’t know if I will go back there again before fall when it’s cooler.

Thanks Alan, it gets better the further in you go. And I don't see any reason why you couldn't drive your RV on it as long as other cars are driving on it.

The surface of the salt can be highly deceiving - it dries from the top down so the crust you are driving on is similar to ice in the winter with a somewhat liquid salt slush underneath.

Pick your seasons carefully for driving out - there are times of the year when those flats turn into slush that will swallow anything up to their axles other than a flyweight vehicle with oversize balloon tires that can float on top. Early spring is the worst - driving through on I-80 you will see tracks heading off the roadway and maybe getting about 100' out. Followed by the tracks of said vehicle getting pulled out likely by a tow truck winch.

For sure, its seasonal, just like even walking out into Badwater in Death Valley is. That's why I suggested make sure other vehicles are driving on it first. Let them be the guinea pigs.... :)

That is a great image Jim. Now I know why I can't find any decent sunsets around here. You have been monopolizing them all the time.

Absolutely gorgeous image, Jim. Top notch.

Now, if you'd kindly release your hold on clouds and color ....

Seriously, your dedication and stamina really pay off. It's a pleasure to view the results.

You got that right Bart, Jim is like 4 photographers in one. Always on the move, running 4-5 cameras at once and capturing more images than anyone I know.
