The Crack

For many years until recently, I would spend the first week of November in Zion NP. That was an opportunity to visit some places many times and enjoy a lot of time with them. However I only hiked to the Subway once, and made this image along the way. 4x5 large format camera using Fuji Astia color transparency film, drum scanned.

This is just amazing Jeffrey. I have never done the subway hike, just hiking in there seems like a major ordeal, but carrying a LF camera? It was worth it, this is an amazing image.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind comments. The most memorable moment of this crack experience besides this image, was putting my hand in the crack and feeling the ultra smooth walls with the water flowing over me. I really connected with the rock, water, and earth for a few minutes.

Ben, I've been through a few LF rigs and a couple of them have been very lightweight and collapsable, made for hiking. Really not that heavy, as they are basically boxes of air. It is the lenses, loupe, film holders, dark cloth and tripod that add up. When I hiked the Narrows, one time, I took my LF gear AND my 1Ds3. Yikes, but I got the shot.

When I did the narrows, I only took my 5DSmk2 and a 24-70 lens and the tripod. My waders sprung a leak at the turnaround place, and when I got back, I dumped at least a gallon out of each leg. Had I known sooner, I would have dumped them sooner, but wet is wet and it's hard to tell how much water is there.
