If you saw @JimFox post on the Aurora alert, he mentioned that I was traveling to northern Minnesota along the Lake Superior shoreline by Split Rock Lighthouse. It was my first time photographing the northern lights and I picked an amazing event. The lights started just after dusk and I proceeded to photograph for the next four hours. What started as a glow with some small pillars to the north evolved in an event that provided a 360 degree view of the lights. Halfway through the show, the lights started dancing and flickering in the sky. There were times I had to simply stop taking pictures to simply step away from the camera and enjoy the show.
All the time, Jim and I continued to text each other on how amazing the scene was unfolding. The few people shooting next to me have shot the northern lights before and said this was a near lifetime event. Not bad for my first!
The image below shows the lights over Ellingson Island. The lights appear to be shooting straight out from the island. Either that or aliens are firing lights onto it! haha. This was such an amazing experience. Most certainly more to come.
