The Open Road

Generally I like to exclude the works of humans in my landscape shots, but there is something about the open road that really appeals to me. The association of a path or road through an image also helps the viewer traverse the scene, a way in so to speak. Plus driving is a part of my DNA:)
This is the road through the Kananaskis area of southern Alberta.

Zeph, I really think that the ice/snow on the road help me like this picture more. If this were just pure asphalt I'm not sure that it would strike much of a chord with me.

But as-shot I find the lines created as a result of vehicle travel very nice, especially as they lead us to the paydirt of what you are probably en route to shoot.

Very nice Zeph. I like that you shot this from the middle of the road. I don't care much for when a road shot ends up starting with an off center road at the bottom as a result of being shot from the shoulder. It usually just doesn't balance well. I like how you set this up.

Jeff - The wheel worn snow turned into full on packed snow/ice, loved every minute of it.

Here's a shot from further up Highway 40

I love the Canadian Rockies and you have done them justice with these three images. I like the third one the best. I have always thought that if Kananaskis Country were in the US it would be a major national park.

Nice, Zeph.

I particularly like the original post as this road through Kananaskis (probably driving the other way) is one of my favourite drives. Some of the mountain views are exceptional and, of course it's a lot quieter than the Icefields Parkway! That said, the drive past Bow Lake on that highway, going sown the hill, makes a great road shot - if you can grab it without vehicles!
