Ben,
In answer to your question about the crop.
I like the room you leave above the clouds in the 1st version and I like the room you leave below the river on the 2nd version. So i might have a corp that is inclusive of both. I like what Kyle did in his version for an overall tweak but would add some room at the bottom of his for more breathing room for the river as well.
Looks like you got a lot of good input on this one :)
Regards,
Dean

Thanks for the details input Dean, much appreciated. As I do all the input received.

Nice one, Ben! I find myself liking all your versions for their own reasons.

Here is another pass at it starting with a lighter RAW and including most of the ideas in this post. Whatcha think?

Nice, but overly sharpened. I don't think there is a way to take pictures like this without light on the Canyon.
You won't get light in the canyon and color in the clouds at the same time. If you have shot the Grand Canyon you would know that once the light hits the canyon in most cases its harsh. There is nothing wrong with the light that Ben shot in. It's perfect as a matter of fact.

Only went there once. Decided it was impossible to shoot. Nothing compares to the experience.
But I still think this is overly sharpened.

Ben, I'm going with Alan's edit's. Keeping the rocks & sky colors-sat in balance can be a challenge.
You should see what my shot looks like on Velvia o_O You've got me thinking about taking another swipe at it
