Trifid Nebula of the North in Perseus

Last night I started on a new target. This is NGC 1579 in Perseus. This is 20-360 sec subs of hydrogen alpha data. It is in a good position of the sky so I may finish a color image in the nest week. It is a small object which I should have imaged it with the 9.25 but I used the FSQ106 with the 1.6 extender. This is cropped a lot even at 825mm.

Hey Chuck, is there more then one Trifid? Is this Trifid by the Lagoon Nebula?

Great work here with the subs. I see you shot 6 min subs, is that about a typical time you shoot for?

it’s fun to see this one from the beginning stages.

Thanks Jim, Someone came up with the name because it looks like the Trifid. This one is in Perseus and located between Perseus and Auriga. There is a little Rosette nebula, I tried it once but never finished. I'm running out of targets to image that look like objects and do well with narrow band filters.. I would love to do more galaxies but I'm in a bortle 8 area for light pollution and I don't want to spend over 10 hours on short exposures because of light pollution. I have also done most all of the bright galaxies from a dark site. I usually shoot 300-360. sometimes 480 sec shots with narrow band. I would have to do 30 sec or less subs for galaxies. I will post some of my galaxy shots in the future.
I shot O3 on this object last night and there is not much there.

Very cool. I was not familiar with this object, I may have to give it a look. Will definitely look forward to how you get on with this. I am now officially envious of 2 of your OTAs, that nice 9.25 Edge and the FSQ106 - that is my dream refractor! :) The SVQ100 I am using is the poor man's version of that scope.

This object is very small, probably would have been better to image with the 9.25 but I was too lazy to change scopes.
If I could make you feel less envious, the focuser is not that good on the fsq. Once I sell a few items I might get the feather touch. The focusing is very precise and to get the stars round at the edges is very critical especially when using the reducer and extender. My William Optics FLT 110 that I sold held focus much better. The reducer and extender available for the fsq makes this 3 scopes in one, which is great. If I didn't get such a fantastic deal on this scope from a friend I probably would have kept the WO.

Very good to know. That scope is really versatile with the extender and reducer and that huge image circle. I guess I have heard things regarding the focuser, but it looks like you have it figured out. As much as I would like to upgrade to one of these, my Stellarvue is doing a nice job, and I might have to use the money for a new camera instead, we will see :)
