Hello Everyone,
Back after spending 3 weeks island hopping in Indonesia. I had wanted to go to this waterfall ever since I saw a photo of it couple of years ago. It is even more stunning in person. I didn't get the ideal conditions of having Mt. Semuru visible in the background. Mt. Semuru is an active volcano, as my luck would have it, the day before it had a small eruption and was covered in ash clouds and making visibility almost nil. Ash+rainfall also made the main artery flow brown instead of usual white.
Tumpak Sewu is 400 foot tall waterfall, the hike is approx 1.5Mile down, crossing several smaller waterfalls, streams and walking through the jungle.
The hike down was fun...crossing some watefalls using only rope, going down some ol' shaky steps holding onto both handrails, sitting in the waterfall to cool down...can't see anything cuz the sweat is covering the glasses...10 steps later you already want to take a shower. Lemme tell ya...to the locals...all hikes are "easy to moderate"...and this was neither. Took me twice as long to climb back up.
It was a fun long drive from Bromo Crater (more on that later). Checked in late at night at a homestay (tried to live like a local as much as possible), and had some really good food at the local Warung (a small hut/shop, usually attached to residence, where family cooks and sells food) with the driver. Met with our guide the next day and here we are...
A lot of water flows down from underneath the top layer of soil (see vid)
Added Vid from the top.
