Waiting for a Sunset

I have lost count of how many times I have waited patiently in the late afternoon along the Oregon Coast hoping for a colorful sunset. On this particular occasion the late afternoon sun was absolutely blinding so I resorted to hiding behind various sea stacks to get some images out of my wait period anyway.

Turns out that was a good call on this day. In the image below if you look over at the visible ocean horizon on the right hand side you will see a thin gray zone just above the horizon that we call the Marine Layer. It signals death to all colors once the sun drops below the top of that layer and this night was no exception - once the sun dropped down into it the sky immediately turned gray and dashed any hopes for more color.

C&C always welcome.

Good call Alan, I know exactly what you mean about the marine layer and how it kills sunsets. This is a very nice set of sea stacks with a nice gradation of tones .

Nice Bandon shot, Alan. I, too, have waited again and again for the sunset light on this beach - only to see the dreaded marine layer on the horizon, ready to receive the sub and absorb it's colour. When you are in luck, mind you, it can be sensational! I like the comp of this, with the sun hidden behind the stack and the bright water tracing its way around the rocky shapes.

I really like this image Alan. I think it would make a GREAT black and white. Please let me know if you consider posting one!

Very nice indeed, Alan! I think any who has gone to the PNW , or anywhere for that matter, looking for the killer sunset, have felt your pain! Me included!
Still I like the shot a lot.....an engaging comp and pleasing light and mood.

I know that situation as well, Al. Last time I went, out of 9 days, it rained 7. And just a single sunrise -- but it was nuclear, as Jim can attest -- and that, and some jaunts into the rainforests made the trip very rewarding.

I like the idea that all of the stacks seem to be joining you in the expectation of a glorious sunset.

Well done.

Hey Alan,

Nice job on working the sun there. The marine layer has snuffed out many a grand sunset, so working a scene before that is a smart idea. I like how you composed this and arranged the sea stacks.
