Wild horses of Utah

On my way out to Fish Springs in the Utah West desert, I spotted this band of wild horse near Simpson Springs Station on the old Pony Express route. They were too far tp photograph so I carried on, but the next day on my way home I saw them a bit closer, in fact the first horse was right next to the road and was photographed with my landscape lens.

The rest of the horses were pretty far away so I hiked across the desert until they filled my frame using my RF800 f11, hand held at 1/320 sec ISO400

So cool Ben! That’s great that you got wild horses. It’s great you got a close up, and the wider shot is really really sweet! I will need to make trip to that area and just spend the day photographing wild horses.

I like the lighting and scene in the second image with the rather lush looking grasses in the meadow.
Thanks Alan, did you click through for the larger view? This area was really green for late summer.

Thanks Jim, my first time doing wild horses. They look like they are in pretty good shape from the good grass. I bet @Darcy Grizzle could tell us. I suspect spring might be a better time for action.

one of my favorite places to see the wild horses - great shots
Thanks Marcy, so you know the place. Only my second time out here and its near my home.

we will be in SLC for a few days as we head back to our Winter Digs - not sure we will go out there yet but we might , or up to Brighton to see the moose

If you go out via the pony express route be aware it is closed at the Faust road entrance. But you can pick it up where it crosses Hwy 36

Yep they look to be in wonderful shape :). Beautiful shots Ben! One of my bucket list items is going to see the Onaqui herd :)

Right it is west of Salt Lake. There are also wild horses in Cedar Valley which is a bit north of where I was.
