Winged Wednesday 7.6.2022

My contributions to this week's Winged Wednesday are ducks in flight. The open wing reveals the colors of the secondary and tertiary
flight feathers. I love photographing birds in flight.

Male American Wigeon

Blue-wing teals. The female is in the lead

Male Northern Shoveler. The top view reveal the most color

Male Gadwall. The ventral view is special too

A male Ruddy Duck runs to reach flight speed. Breeding plumage is characterized by more brilliant feathers and a blue bill.

I apologize for this long post. It was a special week for me.

A pair of Peregrine falcons live on a high residential tower in Saskatoon. I was invited by a falconer to go outside on the roof to see if we could photograph the leg bands. Both the male and female were extremely loud and aggressive, trying to drive us out of there. I was able to get some decent shots of the female’s leg bands but not of the male. With M59 designation the prairie falcon group was able to determine this female is named Jessie .

Here is a description from Tracy (Manitoba Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project):

“Your Saskatoon female is Jessie, a 2017 hatch from our Logan nestsite in Winnipeg. She’s the daughter of Hart (from the Radisson) & Jolicoeur (from Fargo ND) in their last year together. Joli was one of Dennis’ favourite birds and looking at Jessie, holy cats she looks to have the best of her mom Joli and white markings on her head which we commonly see in Princess’ kids/grandkids/etc. Hart is Princess’ son. If she does have her mom’s ferocity and fearlessness and Princess’ brains, your Saskatoon chicks will do very very well!!

Your Saskatoon male we are assuming is a Regina chick with just a silver band on the right leg? Pretty cool, Andamooka’s family tree is separate from Hart’s & Jolicoeur’s but all of them are successful unto themselves.”

These are so good Eric... I like the Ruddy the best with the high stepping almost airborne look.

Those falcons are seriously unhappy with you from the looks they were giving you. Incredible shots.

A very small contribution from me today, a hoverfly coming in to feed on some St John's Wort. Taken with a Sigma 100-400 @400mm with an extension tube to let me focus a little closer. Ken

No single shot @f13 for almost enough depth of field. The noise created by the very high ISO was cleared up by Deep Prime2. Ken

Well it certainly worked. I have used Topaz DeNoise but not Deep Prime2.
