It's another Winged Wednesday and I'm going to bug you again. The following insects came to my backdoor light and posed for macros.
I promise something different next week than the world of tiny things.

Ashy Gray Lady Beetle looks like a small golden ladybug to me

Lesser Searcher Beetle-09332-Edit.jpg

This is the Black Caterpillar Hunter Beetle. He is a roaming beetle that feeds on caterpillars and soft-bodied insects at night and hides under rocks during the day. He's about 1.5 inches long.

Vella fallax 0150-Edit.jpg

Vella fallax is a species of antlions. The Antlions' larvae have a voracious appetite. They are brutal predators with wide, flat bodies and huge pincers. The larvae dig deep pits. When an ant walks too close to the pit, it falls in, and the larvae snatch it. The adult antlion looks similar to a dragonfly with clubbed antennae. Adults do not eat. Perhaps, the Great Pit of Carkoon in "Return of the Jedi" (Star Wars) was based on the antlions.

White-lined Sphinx 0239-Edit.jpg

White-lined sphinx moth is also known as the hummingbird moth because they look like tiny hummers as they feed on flowers.
