I have the same query as Monica regarding how to set up something like your backyard. Our backyard is full of birds all day long but the layout isn't even vaguely optimized for photography.

There isn't much to the set up. I put out suet, seed, and cracked corn on a table or tripods 12 feet from a blind and wait for the bird to come in. I add flowers and perches to make the photos look more interesting

My yard isn't optimal either and because of large trees and and rock formation I only shoot for a few hour in the morning.

Look for an spot in your yard that has front lighting and separation from the background to set up your feeders. when the birds are used to that spot, replace the feeders with props for the shoot. If the light is never good consider using a flash. I use a blind now, however, for years I just sat and waited. The year round birds will get used to you. The blind really helps with migrating birds. BTW, shooting from inside the house is really like shooting from a blind.
