    Black-billed Magpie Pecker

I always thought of magpies as kind of a scavenger bird and can't say I have ever heard of them doing something like this before. I like the markings on the magpies in your area. The ones I used to see in Utah all the time weren't as distinctive as this one.

    Cappuccino Surf

Thanks Trent - I just checked and this was shot at 1/3200s. For as many thousands of shot I have taken out along the coast I have never tried shooting that fast before. I have watched the water go shooting past here many times but have never seen details like this before - it's not a set of...

Very cool head-on shot of this pair.

The sidelight really makes the colors pop - beautiful scene.

    Cappuccino Surf

Thanks Roger - no two swells were even vaguely lose to doing the same thing as they entered the chasm inlet but the sheer variety of shapes that came out of yesterday's session were quite amazing.

    Cappuccino Surf

Thanks Kurt - Not easy to get a lot of good viewpoints for this without getting clobbered by the spray. I was never able to discern this type of wavelet structure while it was zooming past. I was shooting at 30fps to get this.

Thanks Jameel - I was enjoying a cappuccino while I was posting this one :)

    Cross Orb weaver

Wonderful level of detail - especially in the first image. I don't usually consider spiders to be pretty but you make this one look rather attractive.

    The Underwater Canyon

Thanks Rick - I love watching the surf around interesting coastal formations like this place.

    The Underwater Canyon

Thanks Murali - Thor's Well is right at the mouth of Cook's Chasm. The waves were high enough to pretty much completely swamp the Well so I stayed off the basalt ledge that runs out to that formation. I have been out in that area dozens of times with heavy surf and don't throw caution to the...

    The Underwater Canyon

Thanks Jim - just posted a better one from yesterday.

    Cappuccino Surf

I made a pilgrimage to Cape Perpetua yesterday and decided to try an experiment by shooting with my camera set for high speed shots like I would use for birds in flight to see what kinds of details I could pull out of high surf conditions with heavy sea foam as the waves pounded into Cook's...

    Middle Fork of Snoqualmie River

Sweet colors. That looks like there are still quite a few green leaves waiting their turn. Might be worth some return visits.

A little breakfast, Douglas Squirrel PNW

Cute shot. I am used to the invasive gray squirrels that have moved into urban areas and are more used to people. I like the colors on the native species.

    A giant bird

Interesting palette - a very different way of looking at that rock. Takes a bit of imagination to see a bird on the rock faces but its there if you are looking for it :)

    The Underwater Canyon

Thanks Jameel - just about to head up to the Cape area in a few minutes. Hopefully the waves are still strong.

    The Underwater Canyon

Cook's Chasm is an underwater canyon in the basalt at Cape Perpetua that offers up some fun displays when the swells are high during stormy weather. There is also a hole in the basalt with an opening to the canyon that acts as a blowhole when the waves come crashing up the chasm. This is a shot...
