I guess the male has tiny red patch above the white cheek. We also had about 4 young but the sun was behind them and could not get a good pic The young sound like Brown Headed Nuthatch which sound like squeaky rubber ducky toys.Neat capture - interesting to note the leg band on this specimen. Where does the red part of the name come into play?
Thanks Jameel! I was happy to hear the young ones around.Interesting to see their claws that allow them to perch the way they do. Nice capture.
I've been watching several species at the trails I go to, they are very interesting. I wish we had the Acorn Wp in Fl. That is my favorite. What a cool bird to have close to you Chuck! There is something really cool about woodpeckers.
I did see that one was reported in Arkansas some time ago about 2004 or 2005The weekend I closed out North American woodpeckers with the red Cockaded, Ivory bills were reported in Arkansas. Superb photo, Chuckp
