First Dance & Cake...

I took this shot at the LAPD Academy's banquet hall... but come to think about it... it could be anywhere! :) It was back-lit with a photogenic 1250 powerlight, set at about half power, which was about 300WS! shot at f/11, with a Nikon D2x, 28-70 f/2.8 lens, with ISO 400. I wanted the cake to be sharp as well as the couple! I did work on this image with photoshop, I bumped up the contrast in order to get rid of some of the details that could still be seen because of the light bouncing off the bride's dress, even though it was shot at a relatively high speed... 1/125th of a second, with such small aperture. I also want to mention that I do not like "posing" these type of shots, I do however tell them to "look at each other" during the first dance... because couples tend to want to rest their heads in each other's shoulders while doing the first dance, to the tune of "another one bites the dust"... just kidding!!! :) :)

Thanks for your comments! This is probably one of the hardest shots I have to do while covering a wedding... I know! I could "pose" the shot! But that takes all of the fun out of it! I make it a point to get this shot, as it happens! And I am proud to say that I can get it 8 out 10 times... and when I can NOT get it, I just turn my flash on, and get it that way! Like my guru used to say: "when in doubt, or in trouble... use flash!"

Take care!

Oh wow! With traveling I hadn't seen this one. What wonderful minimalism in the lighting and silhouetting of the couple.
