Joshua Tree at Night

Interesting lighting for the scene. Looks very nice for my eyes. I am guessing the moon is behind you for the shadows and light on the cacti. The orange glow - city lights? Adds a nice effect even if it is light pollution.

Thanks Alan I am glad you liked it. Yeah I am pretty sure that as Doug said the light is from Palm Springs. Generally speaking we don’t like the light pollution at night, but in cases like this where there can be some clouds it actually is kind of cool I think.

HA! This was the time you and I went there...my only trip to JT! It was my first time shooting night photos

The light pollution makes it look very other worldly -- like the mother ship coming down. Nice job, Jim.

Excellent photo, Jim! I like it for the same reasons. And I love how the stars are shining sharply through that thin layer of fog...love that effect. Quite dreamy. How did you get so much fill light on the tree and ground?

Great image Jim! And now you can see (probably you knew this when you took it) that you have gotten the Orion constellation in the sky too - very good! Wish I was as close to JTNP as you are - you really have some great images from there and this is definitely another one!

Thank you Amy.

it’s been a while since I shot this one, but I am pretty sure I just used a headlamp to light this up. I am glad you like this. Some people don’t want to shoot at night when there are clouds, but I have always liked the look and feel and mystery that clouds can add at night, even if the hide some of the stars.

Agreed! The clouds add that soft look too, especially in this photo. It's like a half-transparent veil over the stars.
