New Zealand's Southern Coast (North Island)

I've been perusing photos taken in 2017 around Wellington, New Zealand where I lived for almost 3 years with my husband. Makes me miss it. Wellington is on the southern coast of the North Island. At sunset you can glimpse mountain peaks on the South Island across the strait. The small village feel around here really grows on you. New Zealand is so small that it makes for a close-knit community feeling wherever you go.

Long exposure in Lyall Bay (we lived up on the hill to the right):

Moa Point - one of my favorite bays to visit around sunset. There was a lot of noise on this photo (taken with a Canon Rebel T5i with Tamron lens) but after some retouching I'm happy with it. It was fun to do a fresh edit of this one, lets me know I've learned something in the past couple years...

The shots of the bay in the first image is a very pleasant view in the evening light. The stormy skies in the second image offer up some nice colors for the sunset. That looks like a pretty wide range of light for the sensors of your old T5i but you managed to recover a lot of the details in the scene anyway.

Nice pair of images - with nod to the second.

Good choice leaving the hill side dark Amy. Any effort to recover details would show a great deal of noise.

Thanks a lot, Alan :)

Really liking that second shot.
Thanks! I like it too and will share some more sunsets from around the area soon - there sure were some firey sunsets.

Thanks Jameel, you're absolutely right about the foreground. At that point it was getting dark fast so there was no saving those shrubs.

What an awesome place to live for 3 years! No wonder processing these made you miss it.

i sure like the reflections in #1. But like Ben #2 really grabs me! I think you did a pretty good job with cleaning it up. As to it’s noise, did you capture more than 1 photo from that spot? Were you using a tripod?

you really nailed it in #2. the clouds glowing around the mountain and the foreground really come together nicely.

check out topaz denoise if you want to clean up the noise without losing detail.

Thanks pepper! This is the second time I'm hearing about Topaz, will be sure to try it out.

Love them both but the second one is my favourite.

I really like the light in the second, although the foreground does seem kind of messy. I'd be tempted to crop some from the bottom and right to better focus on the great light in the upper part of the image.

Hi Amy,

Number one is a nice serene image, but #2 has that sky. The ground layer is a bit muddy looking, so I'll second Kyle's suggestion to lose part of the bottom.

Like them both (New Zealand is on my bucket list!), but especially the 2nd one. The sky is great, and I love the contrast with the dark hills.

Thanks, Jim. I did get a few photos from here, including a wider panorama, though I liked the sky in this one the best. I wasn't using a tripod; my shutter speed was 500-1000 which was metered for the bright area. As such the dark foreground areas are really dark in the originals and unfortunately I doubt there's much information there to work with.

great images
Thanks Joe!

Thanks! New Zealand is gorgeous and has a wide variety of climates and landscapes to explore. I hope you get a chance to go sometime :)

Thanks Kyle and Tim :) Following your suggestion I tried changing the crop and I think I like this better:
