Thousand Island Lake

Thousand Island Lake is in the Ansel Adams Wilderness next to Yosemite. It's a very cool place that I backpacked into a few years back. This was back when snow was a bit more common in the Eastern Sierra and the snow lasted well into August. I am not one for keeping man made objects in my landscapes, and I wasn't real fond of the people setting their tents up right next to the lake when there were spots away from the water. But since it was there, I decided to take advantage of it.

Love it, Jim. We went there a few years ago (not with the great snow pack you had). We got there a little late, just before dark, and camped right in that area (I think a little to the right of what you have). It was one of the best hikes ever. There's a great movie of the Muir trail passing nearby: "Mile, Mile and a Half", available at "themuirproject.com", well worth watching, with some cool music by Opus Orange.

The tents do add a needed sense of scale to this scene for those of us who have never been there. That water does not look warm and inviting.

The tents do add scale and a touch of color to set the imagination wondering how it would be to camp there, but I’d make a copy and zap them out; just to see what it would look like ;).

Hey, at least the campers weren't sunbathing nude...
That orange tent is pretty bright. There's a reason why tents in the EU are now required to blend in with the environment - have to be grey-green.

Ha ha, yep everyone had clothes on that I could see.

Yeah, the EU is thinking pretty smart with the tent colors I think.

When I processed this, and it was years ago, but I do recall doing that exact thing to compare with and without the tents. I ended up going with the tents in the shot version because I didn’t have any shots like that. So for me to be different, I left them in.

Nice shot Jim, as others have already mentioned the tents add some scale to the scene . It looks like an amazing place to go camping .. I also like the light you caught in the peaks.

Dean

Thanks Dean! Yeah, it's a fun place to camp. That hike can be a bit daunting depending on which route one takes, especially with a full backpack there are a few significant elevation gains.

I think the light on the peaks is another reason why I left the tents, especially the orange one, because I thought their placement balanced well with the light on the peaks in the upper right.

Two clicks and they are gone. That is a very nice image, Jim. While we are talking about nudity, I encountered two instances of mating. One was on Havasu Creek below Beaver Falls where a couple was being amorous in some scouring rushes. The embarrassing thing was that I had a Geology Field class of twenty students with me. They got up and ran away. Another was along Fossil Creek when Guy and I were going to take some fall images. We stopped, turned away, and pretended we didn't see anything. A few minutes later they put their clothes on and waved us on.
