Unseasonably warm weather wasn't good for our normal x-skiing so my wife and I checked out the snow free, low elevation, Heybrook Ridge trail near the town of Index WA. A very pleasant easy 2 miles through 2nd growth forest leads to a good view of Mt. Index (which was in shade when we got there...
We took advantage of the only government shutdown benefit I can think of - the forest service didn't have the $ to shut down the road to Mt. Pilchuck yet so we managed to drive all the way to the trailhead parking lot for a rare easy winter climb. Due to recent rain then freeze cycles the snow...
The first day I work up to a dusting of snow I drove out to Desert View to watch the sun set! it was beautiful! To crop or not? CC welcome!

Looking into the entrance to one of the Big Four ice caves with recent avalanche debris partially covering the entrance. Obviously this wouldn't be a safe location in dangerous avy conditions:eek:
Drone view down onto the avalanche path that makes the snow/ice pile where the Big Four Ice Caves develop. This was taken on a low risk day, I wouldn't venture up there later in the winter when the chance of big slides increases (I've seen debris piled up all the way to tree line).
The snow wasn't perfect, but it was good to get out for my first day of back-country skiing this year up at Stevens Pass WA.

Yesterday's sunrise at frozen Dream Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park. Both pictures took from the same location at around same time, one facing west and the other east. It was very hard to take the pictures with gusty winds up to 35 mph.
When the evening fog catches the last light of the sunset, it creates an ethereal feeling. I hope that this photo taken somewhere on top of the mountain captures just that.
While hiking through the woods today at Ridway State Park, I found myself surrounded by our woodland friends. They didn't seem to care that I was there or not. These two were the most captivating of the group.
He's sticking his tongue out at me :p
My favorite shot from a week of fantastic back-country skiing at Rodgers Pass in BC. This was the run of a lifetime - no tracks, perfect snow with low avy danger, and sun! I made a large print of it for my friend Eric who buys a red jacket just for my pictures. I sure hope I can get a day this...
