With strong, sustained, gusty winds and the early evening sun directly in our field of vision, the ride to the Toadstools west of Page, AZ, was a miserable one. But, the walk from the parking lot to these formations was pleasant enough with clumps of blooming wildflowers. We watched the day's...
In the later stages of my motorcycle trip, we spent a night in Sedona. We experienced a delay in Flagstaff after my friend's bike blew its rear tire, but luckily we were able to limp to a tire shop where they replaced both of his tires.
So we were on our way to Sedona in the late afternoon...
My friends and I spent two nights in Moab during our motorcycle trip. We drove 350-some miles from Page, AZ the day before and on this day, we *only* drove about 160 miles. Granted, those miles were pretty leisurely, like on the wonderful, curvy roads inside and outside Canyonlands National...
Today I returned home from a 3,000+ mile road trip through four states, 2,400 miles of which were done on a Harley Davidson motorcycle. One of the first stops was Valley of Fire State Park where I photographed Elephant Rock for the first time. It was very windy that day which created some dusty...
On Friday, I drove into the Southern Sierra for work on a road I had never used before. I was greeted with an astonishing wildflower superbloom amongst thick groves of Joshua trees, so I decided to return on Sunday so I could wander around these steep slopes to properly photograph them. I had it...
On Sunday I drove to Panamint Springs in Death Valley National Park to watch the sunset. There were a few other cars parked near me but by the time the show had ended, I was the only one left standing.
It took me more than 9 hours to drive home yesterday from Southern California because of scenes like this at the Trona Pinnacles. Parts of the Mojave Desert have exploded with wildflowers and some people who've lived here a lot longer than I have told me they'd never seen flowers out here before.
At one point this weekend during the blizzard, U.S. 395 was closed from Bishop to Bridgeport. Before it opened, I had the chance to drive on it on Monday. I hadn't seen lenticular clouds reflected on pavement before. Also notice how green Mono Lake is due to high winds. Taken with an iPhone 13.
To shoot the sunrise at Lake Manly in Death Valley National Park, this time I only had to leave at 0500 because I camped overnight at Stovepipe Wells. There was no color in the western sky, nor did Telescope Peak light up because of clouds in the east. But, I was treated to this relaxing...
Lake Manly grew in size since the last time I saw it in person in November. This shot was taken in the middle of the day, hence the black and white treatment.
Everyone and their mother knows about the lake in Death Valley currently. But have you heard about the lakes in Panamint Valley? My parents and I saw some rare/special stuff yesterday in Death Valley National Park.
I went on a field trip for work this week to document cleanup on U.S. 395 from that huge storm in the Eastern Sierra. Along with all the snowplow action, I found a car that had been abandoned during the storm. The CHP officers at the scene told me they were waiting for the tow truck to arrive.
I spent a long weekend at the beach in Southern California. Before heading over to LAX to pick up a friend from the airport, I photographed downtown Los Angeles during the sunset from a hilltop. It exceeded my expectations.
My 2023 was one of the better years. It was crazy in the good sense in that there was a ton of travel to many new places. For this exercise, I interpret "Best of 2023" to be like a photo journal of my favorite trips rather than my best photographs. It's difficult to choose just 10 photos as not...
This is the time of year when male tarantulas emerge from their burrows to search for a mate. This guy was crossing the road on my way through Death Valley National Park.
Inspired by @JimFox and his images of the temporary lake in Badwater Basin, I voluntarily chose to wake up at 0230 so I could drive to this part of Death Valley National Park for sunrise. The color quickly fizzled, but I'd say this result was worth the effort.
This image is of the south fork of Bishop Creek, just a few miles below South Lake near Bishop, CA. Misty Falls is visible if you zoom in close enough. I found it difficult to edit the image due to the wide range of light at this time of the day.
I drove up to the spine of the White Mountains yesterday with a friend and encountered a barren landscape. White Mountain Peak is visible in the middle of the image standing at 14,252 feet on the east side of the Owens Valley overlooking Bishop, CA. Here, unlike Mt. Whitney about 60 miles south...
I just returned from a long weekend in Las Vegas. During my side trip to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, I was gobsmacked by the amount of wildflowers and briefly wondered if I had time traveled back to March-April 2023.
